Next Wednesday, April 23rd from 6pm to 9pm, the University District Food Bank will be playing guest bartender for 50 North Restaurant,in an effort to raise a little extra cash.
50 North is located at 5001 25th Ave NE #100 (at Northcut Landing), with free garage parking. It’s a family-friendly restaurant and serves dinner until 9pm on weeknights with the bar closing down at 10pm.
Next Wednesday, 10% of all drink sales will be donated to the Food Bank. Receipts will also give an opportunity to donate extra amounts to the Food Bank on your credit/debit card, and there will be tip jars around the bar collecting also. Finally, 50 North is donating $1 to the University Food Back for every “LIKE” they receive on Facebook today through the event night, so click through and give them a like!
I’m a huge proponent of the University Food Bank (well, any food bank). And those of you who know we well know that I’m also a proponent of beer and wine. So I’m thrilled to pass along that Wine World and Spirits has teamed up with the U-District Food Bank for the second annual Chili Cook-Off.
The Cook-Off will be held on Sunday, March 3rd from 2pm to 5pm at Wine World and Spirit’s private ballroom, with proceeds benefiting the food bank. Tickets are $10 and include your chili tastes plus 5 drink tickets to sample local beers and wines that have been selected to pair with the chili.
Men, that’s probably all you need to read – buy your ticket here or at the door.
Ladies, if you still need a little tempting, this is the part where I get to tell you that the chili will be judged by Seattle firefighters. And yes, I know that’s a totally sexist comment and I don’t really care. FIREFIGHTERS.
Wine World & Spirits is located at 400 NE 45th.
Dine Around Seattle is back – the month-long extravaganza where some of Seattle’s finest restaurants offer three courses for just $30 – a way to experience some gourmet food at a not-so-gourmet price. You can go to the participating restaurants March 1st through the 29th on Sundays through Thursdays (not Fridays and Saturdays). Didn’t realize there was so much good food in north Seattle? Where, now’s your chance. Here’s the participating restaurants in our neighborhood:
35th Street Bistro: at 709 N 35th Street in Fremont, serving “country European” cuisine.
Carmelita at 7314 Greenwood Ave N in Phinney Ridge, a vegetarian restaurant and bar.
Chiso at 3520 Fremont Ave N in Fremont, a sushi house and Japanese restaurant.
Eva at 2227 N 56th Street in Tanglet0wn, a traditional restaurant and wine bar.
Mamma Melina at 5101 25th Ave NE in the U-District, with fine Italian dining.
Ray’s Boathouse at 6049 Seaview Ave NW in Ballard, specializing in seafood.
Volterra at 5411 Ballard Ave NW in Ballard, with contemporary Italian dining.
This is the 10th year of Dine around Seattle, and for those looking to eat outside of the neighborhood there are also restaurants all over Seattle, as well as the Eastside. For a complete list of restaurants, follow the Dine around Seattle website here.
It’s no secret I love to post opportunities to help the University District Food Bank, as it helps more than 1100 each WEEK get a balanced meal in their stomachs and is one of the most worthy local causes out there. So I’m happy to report on a few new ways you can help (and have fun too!)
Drink at the Ravenna Alehouse:
Wednesday, November 30th (that’s tomorrow!) from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., stop by the Ravenna Alehouse (2258 NE 65th Street) and drink a glass of New Belgium Brewing Snow Day Ale. For every pint sold, New Belgium Brewing will donate $1 to the Food Bank. You also get to keep your New Belgium Brewing glass!
Shop at Ten Thousand Villages:
On Thursday, December 1st, shop at Ten Thousand Villages (6417 Roosevelt Ave NE) from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and the store will donate 15% of their net sales to the Food Bank. What a great way to get some Christmas shopping done while helping fight hunger!
Have a beer at Shultzy’s Sausage:
Anytime December 1st through the 31st, Shultzy’s Sausage (at 4114 University Way NE) will donate $1 to the U-District Food Bank for every liter of beer sold. Hey – December 1st, why not watch the Seahawks kick some Eagle butt while helping the Food Bank!
The University District Food Bank’s 16th Annual “Take a Bite out of Hunger” auction was their most successful ever – raising $125,000 between ticket sales, item sales, and sponsorship. Congrats to them!
The U-District Food Bank serves over 1,100 families each week and in 2010 distributed over 2.2 million pounds of food. They serve ZIP codes 98102, 98103, 98105, 98112, 98115 and 98125 – that’s a lot of mouths to feed!
The auction may be over but University District Food Bank takes donations year-round, and things tend to get slow around the holidays. If you’d like to give, you can donate online here.
